Non-Formal Education for Children at Risk

It is estimated that just about half of the Nepali population is literate. Non-Formal Education (NFE) Classes for Children at Risk Literacy rates are substantially higher in urban areas (64 percent) than in rural areas (36 percent). There are marked gender disparities in literacy rates: 52% of males are literate as compared to 24% of females.

Between May 2005 and February 2006, CAC-Nepal in conjunction with Winrock International's Circle Project Asia, ran Non-Formal Education Classes for children vulnerable to trafficking, sexual exploitation and child labour. 100 children attended these classes in 4 schools in the Bhaktapur district. These children were sourced from various target groups such as children of sex workers, those in factories, transportation, and trafficked and migrant children. Currently 48 of these children will continue to attend mainstream school up to SLC and are now funded by CAC-Nepal. Click here to download the report and see photos
